چکیده

UNLABELLED Evolutionary relationships are frequently described by phylogenetic trees, but a central barrier in many fields is the difficulty of interpreting data containing conflicting phylogenetic signals. We present a metric-based method for comparing trees which extracts distinct alternative evolutionary relationships embedded in data. We demonstrate detection and resolution of phylogenetic uncertainty in a recent study of anole lizards, leading to alternate hypotheses about their evolutionary relationships. We use our approach to compare trees derived from different genes of Ebolavirus and find that the VP30 gene has a distinct phylogenetic signature composed of three alternatives that differ in the deep branching structure. KEY WORDS phylogenetics, evolution, tree metrics, genetics, sequencing.

Characterization of the Full Length Coat Protein Gene of Iranian Grapevine fanleaf virus isolates, genetic variation and phylogenetic analysis

The full-length coat protein gene of Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV) isolates from Iran was characterized byreverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) and sequencing. The expected 1515 bp coatprotein (CP) gene amplicon was obtained for 16 isolates out of 89 that were identified by double antibodysandwich enzyme-linked immunesorbent assay (DASELISA) in a population ...

TOOL : a BioJS component to visualise phylogenetic trees

Phylogenetic trees are widely used to represent the evolution of Summary: gene families. As the history of gene families can be complex (including lots of gene duplications), its visualisation can become a difficult task. A good/accurate visualisation of phylogenetic trees especially on the web allows easier understanding and interpretation of trees to help to reveal the mechanisms that shape t...

P´olya Urn Models and Connections to Random Trees: A Review

This paper reviews P´olya urn models and their connection to random trees. Basic results are presented, together with proofs that underly the historical evolution of the accompanying thought process. Extensions and generalizations are given according to chronology: • P´olya-Eggenberger’s urn • Bernard Friedman’s urn • Generalized P´olya urns • Extended urn schemes • Invertible urn schemes ...

Prey-Capture Strategies of Fish-Hunting Cone Snails: Behavior, Neurobiology and Evolution.

The venomous fish-hunting cone snails (Conus) comprise eight distinct lineages evolved from ancestors that preyed on worms. In this article, we attempt to reconstruct events resulting in this shift in food resource by closely examining patterns of behavior, biochemical agents (toxins) that facilitate prey capture and the combinations of toxins present in extant species. The first sections intro...

structure into models of cladogenesis and lineage extinction. The techniques that we have described are very general. They can be applied to reveal long-term evolutionary trends in phylogenetic trees, recent patterns of local population history, and the epidemic history of infectious diseases. In this article, we have focused on phyla genetic epidemiology. Because of its obvious applicability t...
